We all need a break, a welcome respite from the busyness of everyday life and work. It’s a time to kick back, relax, and forget about your regular problems for a little while. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t be prepared before you head out for a few weeks. Your electronics mustn’t be forgotten, so what should you switch off when you go on holiday?

In this article, we take you through what should be switched off, what should be left on, and some handy additional information to help keep your home safe while you are away. Peace of mind means you can enjoy a more relaxed holiday.

WHAT SHOULD BE SWITCHED OFF WHEN YOU GO AWAY?

Pretty much everything should be switched off when you are off on holiday. Nothing needs to be left on, except for the items mentioned in the next section, and it can save you some money.

Even the hot water should be turned off because it saves you the cost of heating the tank for no reason while you are holidaying. Your home deserves a break as much as you do, so switch it all off before you head to the care and set off.

WHAT SHOULD BE LEFT ON WHEN YOU GO ON HOLIDAY?

You should leave the fridge and freezer on while you are away, especially if there is food inside. While they will cost money to run, they have also been designed to operate safely so that they can be left running at all times.

Therefore, there is no risk to your home when you leave them on.

SHOULD YOU LEAVE THE WIFI ON WHEN YOU GO AWAY?

You don’t have to switch the WiFi off when you are away, as the technology has evolved to the point that there won’t be any connectivity issues as a result. Additionally, if your router is in the window, the light from it can deter potential burglars as they think someone is home.

It’s down to personal preference, but we will note that you’ll save a little money if you switch the router off while you’re away. You may need to consider if you have any smart home devices such as lights and cameras that you want to be able to operate while you are away from your home.

WHY SHOULD YOU SWITCH ELECTRONICS OFF WHEN YOU GO ON HOLIDAY?

There is minimal risk of electrical fire or overheating when you are away with modern appliances and electronics. This is because they have been designed with safety in mind, so you don’t need to panic if you have left them on.

However, older devices are at risk of overheating and fire, which can be a massive risk to the safety of your home. There is always going to be risk involved, so you might as well let your mind relax and switch everything off just to stay safe.

Modern devices aren’t going to cost a fortune, and they are a lot safer, but caution should never be underestimated. Every penny counts with the rising cost of living, and it gives you peace of mind to know that your home is safe.

Not everything needs to be switched off, but why not give your devices a holiday too? We hope you have a restful trip and that you come back feeling refreshed (and your devices do too).
